Malta-ESA Cooperation
The directorate for Space Technology was set up towards the end of 2012 to focus on building relationships with foreign space agencies, the Maltese government, industry and educational sector. It aims to explore the use of space-applications for businesses and the educational sector amongst others. This was in part resulting from the Cooperation Agreement which Malta signed with the European Space Agency (ESA) on 20th February 2012.
Thanks to such an agreement and with support from the Ministry for Education and Employment, Maltese scientists and engineers are now able to engage in traineeships at ESA’s state of the art facilities.
This cooperation also opens up opportunities for Malta to create a framework for more intensive cooperation on ESA projects in the future. As a matter of fact the Space Technology Directorate is currently engaged in organising an ESA technical visit in Malta, during which ESA experts can map space-related potential within the local sector. This also facilitates the identification of areas that a national space strategy should specifically address in order to bring future benefits to Malta.
