Through MCST participation in JPI Oceans, Malta is co-leading the JPI Oceans Joint Action – Science for Good Environmental Status (S4GES) in collaboration with Italy and Belgium to adopt an innovative approach to the evaluation of the marine Good Environmental Status. This Joint Action aims to contribute to a better understanding and achievement of Good Environmental Status in support of the Marine Strategic Framework Directive (MSFD). It is exploring new approaches to determine the GES and provide efficient and effective observational strategies to Member States.

During 2022, through an open expression of interest, MCST supported a Maltese Marine Environmental Professional to work with a team of transnational researchers on board a state-of-the-art research vessel in the North Sea in July 2022. The expedition aimed to assess the marine environmental status by integrating physical, chemical and biological information from an area of the North Sea. In addition, a team of Maltese experts attended a follow-up workshop in Venice to further discuss and analyse the data collected from the research cruise.

As data analysis from the campaign is now providing preliminary results, JPI Oceans’ S4GES organized a workshop in Malta on the 21st and 22nd of June 2023, hosted by MCST, to debate the new results from different initiatives within the scientific community, to promote a salient knowledge-based support to policy, and to give new substance to interpretation of GES.
